Core Beliefs & Philosophy

At Second School our decisions are based on our core beliefs and philosophy.  There are 10 tenets which govern all our decisions and make Second School effective

On the present school system

  1. Present class sizes in schools are too large to provide for complete learning.  Children need individual time out to revise and internalize new concepts. Some children manage to do this on their own, or with their parents’ help. Many more others need guidance.
  2. Large class sizes, and the incomplete learning that results, also leads to a situation where many children do not learn to love the subjects they are taught. Without a love of the subject, further learning gets impaired.
  3. It is essential to get better marks in school and board exams – both to build confidence and demonstrate knowledge.  Second School teaching is fully mapped to each class’ curriculum

On children and learning

  1. It is possible for every student to develop a liking for Maths (or any other subject). Love for a subject often is a function of how it is taught.
  2. It is important for students to connect with the physical reality of maths (or other subject), and its practical use in our lives
  3. Each individual has specific strengths that should be leveraged and weaknesses that must be confronted and resolved.  Children also have different learning styles that must be recognised.
  4. There is no substitute for practice.  Practicing maths (or other subject) extensively ensures that the concepts once understood, are retained and become instinctive.

On helping children

  1. Like going to a doctor, regular assessment with diagnostics and reporting help the child, the tutor and the parent provide the right solution (medication) for most improvement
  2. Teachers must not only know and love the subject, they must also know how to get students to learn and be well versed in proper teaching techniques
  3. Thorough knowledge is built on solid foundations. If a child does not gain a deep understanding of concepts in the smaller classes, it will be difficult to do so later.
